The “EMODnet Data Ingestion” Project is implemented by a European Network of 44 Organizations (Government bodies, marine research institutes and companies) from 29 coastal countries. Geographically, the network of participating organizations includes all the countries that enclose the European sea basins and also covers all thematic areas of EMODnet (European Marine Observation and Data Network) such as bathymetry, geology, marine flora and fauna, biochemistry, biology, coastal management ecosystems etc.

The purpose of the project is to facilitate and streamline the process by which marine data from any source (including national monitoring programs, research projects, private companies) is voluntarily submitted for safekeeping and sharing in data centers. The process and the services provided are simple and user-friendly and were developed using the existing infrastructure and know-how of the entities that provide the respective services and infrastructure. The project is not intended to provide yet another permanent data repository. Instead, it promotes the use of those that are now active. The only limitation it sets regarding the availability of the data is that it will be made free to use and with open access to all. G

GET implemented, on behalf of HCMR which participates as a scientific officer, tasks related to the following work packages:

  • WP1.2 Implementation and operation of User Management component
  • WP1.3 Development and operation of Data Submission service
  • WP1.4: Development and operation of Data Tracking service
  • WP1.6: Development and operation of Summary Records service
  • WP1.7: Gradual upgrading of portal and services based upon user feedback.

The implementation of the system developed by GET is based on free / open-source software (FOSS). For selected data sets of HCMR but also sets of data to be submitted by providers from the Greek territory, display and download services were developed, in accordance with the specifications of the INSPIRE Directive. GET continuously supports HCMR with the maintenance and upgrades of the provided solution, as well as with the development of new functions therein.
