Ottoman, Byzantine and Venetian Data Management Infrastructure

PROFILE

Name: “Palaeo-Science and History” (PS&H) Independent Max Planck Research Group

The “Palaeo-Science and History” (PS&H) Independent Max Planck Research Group (formerly “Byzantine Resilience” (ByzRes)) explores the ways in which history as a humanistic discipline converges with the environmental sciences that focus on the past (and thus can be described as “Palaeo-Science”). Based on the long-term involvement of the team members in different cross-disciplinary projects and in Princeton University’s Climate Change and History Research Initiative, the group further develops practices for the interaction between history and the natural sciences.

The purpose of the project was to develop an infrastructure for data collection, management and processing taxation cadastral material and cartographic data.

For this reason, robust tools were designed and implemented in order to support the Research Group’s functions, related to the digitization of information, taking into consideration the need for an integrated (GEO)informational infrastructure.

GET developed a GIS database and automated workflows to handle geospatial “Palaeo-Science” data, derived from documents originating in Byzantine, Ottoman and Venetian archives. Also, forms were created to accept new user input, display current values from database and support centralized editing from concurrent users.

The basic outcomes of this project are :

  • storage, organization and management of data and information to a central database.
  • support of the cartographic presentation of the historical data and spatiotemporal analysis procedures.
  • ability to support future applications and data import from other sources.

TECHNOLOGY

  • PostgreSQL/PostGIS
  • QGIS
